I’ve been wanting to do a comparsion vid of Rita Hayworth and Gene Tierney for some time, two of my (many) favorite actresses of the 40s. As I thought more about it, the more I realized about the coincidences these two women had in terms of their careers and personal lives. Both were born in Brooklyn within almost exactly two years and one month of each other, both had strict fathers, were one of three children and had Irish ancestry (Rita through her mother). Rita and Gene were each typed in exotic or ethnic stereotypical roles in their early careers. Rita was originally signed with Fox, Gene’s home studio, until she was dropped while still under the name Rita Cansino before she was picked up by Columbia and later “transformed” into Rita Hayworth. Gene was originally picked up by Columbia due to her stage success in New York but her nervousness resulted in her option being dropped. It was in Columbia’s make-up department that she and Rita first met. Rita was later loaned out back to Fox a few times, for such films as “Blood And Sand” (1941) as the vixenish Dona Sol (a role that Gene was considered at one time for), and the musical “My Gal Sal” (1942). They costarred with some of the same actors onscreen, such as Tyrone Power, Victor Mature, Laird Cregar, Glenn Ford, Spencer Tracy, Jose Ferrer and Rex Harrison. Although both were popular with the public in the early 40s, it wasn’t until mid-decade that they both became household names and part of public imagination when they each took the title roles in two film noirs that they would forever after be ociated. With Tierney, of course that was “Laura” (1944), and Hayworth’s was of course “Gilda” (1946). Both were deeply involved with boosting troop morale during WWII, both would have two daughters, and sadly their maritial problems would become public knowledge through divorce and custody battles. Career-wise, they were both extremely talented and hard-working, which was overlooked because of their physical beauty. They also proved their ranges in a variety of genres (Rita, of course, was ociated with musicals more than any other). Their most obvious connection is Prince Aly Khan, to whom Rita was married and Gene would later date and become engaged to. Most poignantly, their emotional and mental deteriorations (Rita’s Alzheimer’s, Gene’s nervous breakdowns), just increases their connection and legacy to me. Two beautiful ladies with depth, intelligence, gentleness and talent, who had such tragedy in their lives but waged a brave battle against their demons.
